Switch Mode Power Supply

A switched-mode power supply (switching-mode power supply, switch-mode power supply, switched power supply, SMPS, or switcher) is an electronic power supply that incorporates a switching regulator to convert electrical power efficiently. A Switching DC power supply (also known as switch mode power supply) regulates the output voltage through a process called pulse width modulation (PWM). The PWM process generates some high frequency noise, but enables the switching power supplies to be built with very high power efficiency and small form factor.

Switch Mode Power Supply
A switch mode power supply is a power converter that utilises switching devices such as MOSFETs that continuously turn on and off at high frequency; and energy storage devices such as the capacitors and inductors to supply power during the non-conduction state of the switching device.
The supplies have higher efficiencies of up to 90%, are small in size and widely used in computers and other sensitive electronic equipment.
The basic switch mode power supplies (SMPS) are categorized based on supply input and output voltage. The main four groups are:
AC to DC – Off-line DC power supply
DC to DC – Converter
DC to AC – Inverter
AC to AC – Cycloconverter of frequency changer
What is SMPS and its working?
SMPS is the Switched Mode Power Supply circuit which is designed for obtaining the regulated DC output voltage from an unregulated DC or AC voltage. There are four main types of SMPS such as. DC to DC Converter. AC to DC Converter.

It is a PSU (power supply unit) and is usually used in computers to change the voltage to the appropriate range for the computer. An SMPS adjusts output voltage and current between different electrical configurations by switching the basics of typically lossless storage such as capacitors and inductors.
The switching power supply implies higher efficiency due to the high switching frequency, enabling it to use a smaller, less-costly high-frequency transformer as well as lighter, less-costly filter components.
By definition, a switch mode power supply (SMPS) is a type of power supply that uses semiconductor switching techniques, rather than standard linear methods to provide the required output voltage. … This refers to how the transistor switch, inductor, and smoothing capacitor are connected within the basic circuit.
Advantages of SMPS
The SMPS designs are more compact and use smaller transformers. The ability to shrink the supplies is an advantage and an essential requirement for most of the electronic devices with limited space
High efficiency
Flexible technology
The transformer-isolated supplies have stable outputs independent of the input supply voltage
High power density
